Paula Knot top and Mave Skirt

These patterns are by Sycamore Road and True Bias

Such a great pattern combination!

For this post I chose to work with beautiful Swiss dot fabric in washed tencel and cotton blend.

The Fabric

This fabric is absolutely gorgeous. It is a Tencel cotton blend about 4.3oz/yard which it a great weight for both tops and bottoms. The fabric is a washed blend which makes it so soft and drapes beautifully.

In all my fabric journey, I have not been more satisfied with the fabric. It has the feel of a gauze yet has the drape of a tencel.

The fabric comes in 59″ width and it comes in this beautiful brown that I think would look great in all skin tones.

The fabric does unravel when cut so I would recommend that you treat it as though it is a double gauze. By that I mean stay stitch necklines, bias lines as try to sew up the garment as soon as possible.

The Patterns

I knew I wanted to make something to show off just this fabric and how it works well for both bottoms and tops. I thought about dresses, jumpsuits and finally settled on making a top and a bottom so I can wear them together or a separates.

Paula Knot top by Sycamore Road Patterns

I am partial to wrap tops. I feel they a quick to sew and always accentuate the neckline and the waist. I have tried many wrap tops before but when I first saw Sycamore Road’s Paula Knot top, I was sold.

This top can be worn in multiple different ways according to the maker’s style and level of comfort. It would look great with pants/shorts and skirts.

Love the wrap style and the cropped length of the top.

Looking at the size. charts I fall into size C, however I chose to cut out out size A. I am petite on top and I usually make petite adjustments to patterns. Looking through the finished garment measurements and knowing there will be a lot of forgiveness because it is a wrap I went with it and I am very happy with how it turned out.

Since this top has a version where you can tie a know int he front and then tie the straps around your waist, to keep the look seamless, the designer. has given openings on either sides of the top. I however, prefer to show less mid section and like to wrap it the normal way. However, this leaves with a considerably large opening on one side. So if you know how you like to wear it, you can change the way the opening is accordingly.

Mave Skirt

This skirt for me a TNT pattern by True Bias. I have made several before. This patterns gives so so much flexibility and the elastic waistband with the pockets is the perfect skirt for all seasons!

For this fabric I chose to make a simple maxi length skirt with just a ruffle at the bottom. This gives a great fit overall and is a pretty fast sew altogether.

I chose to cut out a straight size 4. There are so many options with the skirt with the number of tiers and the length, I urge you to try different one with different fabrics.

For this particular fabric I chose to do a simple 1 tier + ruffle. I think it would. look great with a 3 tier version as well, But since I wanted to make a top as well I wanted to conserve the amount of fabric I used.

This pattern is extremely straight forward and you can never go wring with the chose you make! 🙂

One of my favorite features of this pattern is the width of the waistband with a wide 2″ elastic and how it is finished. It really increases the comfort level of the garment overall.
