Tutorial: Adding an Elastic Hemline to a Tee

Hi friends!Alexis is back on The Makers Studio blog and excited to share another project with two amazing fabrics and two new patterns!I am so thrilled with the two new releases from Chalk and Notch, Evelyn skirt and Max Tee. I paired the Max tee with Hudson Jersey Knit in the color denim and I paired the Evelyn skirt with the Olivia fabric in Terra Cotta.

For this post I decided it would be fun to hack the Max tee and add an elastic hemline. Actually, I have been wanting to do this since I saw the design and this was the perfect opportunity to do it! Hack inspiration:

via Madewell

It’s a super simple hack and here’s how I did it…

1.Using the cropped length line on the front and back bodice pattern pieces, draw a line ¾” below.

2.Cut the fabric with the added length.

3.Sew all per the tutorial except the hemline.

4.For the hemline, serge the raw edge, fold up ¾” and iron flat.

5.Sew the top edge with a ¼” seam allowanceto create the elastic casing. Keepinga 1”-1 1/2”gap open to insert the elastic.

6.Using ½” wide elastic, wrap it around your waist and add 1”-2”. You can adjust the length after you insert the elastic andcheck the fit.

7.Insert the elastic into the casing, try on and then overlap the elastic ends and sew closed.

8.Sew closed the opengap around the casing.

9.ENJOY!

As mentioned above,I paired the Evelyn skirt with the Olivia in Terra Cotta. It is a 100% Lyocell fabric and it’s drapiness was the perfect pairing with View C. I can see myself wearing this dressed up with heels and dressed down with sandals and sneakers.

The front slit is my favorite feature of the Evelyn Skirt.
